How to fix the NHS

Panellists:

  • Claire Ainsley, Director, Project on Center-Left Renewal, Progressive Policy Institute
  • Dr Zubir Ahmed, MP, PPS to Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and Consultant General, Vascular and Transplant Surgeon
  • Stephen Bush, Columnist and Associate Editor, Financial Times
  • Dr Sonia Adesara, GP and Interim Chair, The Fabian Society

The NHS is in crisis, so much so that the new Secretary of State has called it “broken”. The health of the nation is deteriorating while at the same time patients are struggling to access care, health inequalities are deepening, and staff are exhausted. While demand has changed dramatically, the model remains much the same as in 1948.

Better integration between different parts of the health system is welcome, but putting the NHS on a sustainable footing means reducing and diverting demand. It means radically shifting care upstream and into the community, tackling the social determinants and prioritising public health, and empowering patients themselves to manage their care. It also means boosting productivity and investing in technology, data infrastructure and equipment that will support clinical staff to deliver high-quality, timely care.
