Mayor Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands

Labour Party Conference: 'The age of the Mayor: making devolution work'

England is entering a new era of devolution. With the Government committed to expanding and deepening the powers of Mayors and strategic authorities, decisions over housing, transport, skills, public services and economic growth are increasingly being shaped closer to the communities they affect. This creates a significant opportunity to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and give local leaders greater freedom to respond to the needs and ambitions of their areas.

But greater powers must be matched by the capacity, accountability and resources to use them effectively. As the role of Mayors continues to evolve, how should the relationship between central and subnational government change? What powers and capabilities will Mayors need to deliver on their mandates? And how can we ensure that the next phase of devolution strengthens subnational government and delivers better outcomes for communities across England?

Re:State is delighted to welcome Mayor Claire Ward to share her experience of making devolution work in practice, and to explore what Mayors and strategic authorities need to deliver effectively for the communities and economies they represent.

This private roundtable will be held in-person and will take place under the Chatham House rule.
