Preventative policymaking: from theory to practice

Policymaking is still largely a top-down exercise, disengaged from the delivery chain of local government and frontline public services, and the realities of user experience on the ground. Because this gives policymakers an imperfect picture of the situation, opportunities are missed, bad practice is often left unchallenged, and the complexity of delivery is underrated.

Policymakers in Westminster need deeper expertise in the services they work with, a firmer analytical grounding in how to interpret complex and often incomplete evidence, and also the generalist skills to look across the landscape of preventative opportunities and come up with creative new solutions.

And as policymaking is devolved, regional and local prevention organisations will need to build capacity to take on that work in their areas, and grow the pipeline of policy talent to feed their future needs.

Re:State (formerly Reform think tank) is delighted to welcome Emily Braid, Director for Public Service Reform and Management at the Cabinet Office, to examine how policy professionals can make preventative policy a reality.
