Preventing reoffending is critical for creating safer communities and reducing the strain on the criminal justice system – particularly in the context of the overstretched prison estate.
Public services each deal with a significant demand from individuals who move in and out of the justice system, yet their approach to reintegrating them into the community is fragmented. Critical data on their status is rarely shared with the services best placed to support them at the critical moments when it would be most likely to have an effect.
Evidence shows that community-based approaches can be far more effective in breaking the cycle of reoffending, particularly those rooted in housing, employment and support for addiction. By fostering strong local networks, supporting rehabilitation, and addressing the root causes of criminal behaviour, public services can work together to break the cycle of reoffending.
Re:State is delighted to welcome Matt Grey, Executive Director, Rehabilitation, HM Prison and Probation Service, to share his perspective on how reoffending can be reduced by a focus on preventing offenders being pulled back into the justice system, and the opportunities that could come from scaling up innovative new approaches to rehabilitation.
This private roundtable will be held in-person and will take place under the Chatham House rule and is kindly supported by Newton.
