Antonia Bance MP, Member of Parliament for Tipton and Wednesbury.

Quantity and quality: building the homes of the future

Workforce shortages are a major barrier to meeting the Government’s housebuilding ambitions. Architectural and surveying firms are struggling to recruit, the number of local authority planning officers has fallen by a quarter, and the construction industry will soon require an estimated 250,000 additional workers. Government plans to address these shortages — for example launching Skills England and recruiting 300 new planning officers — are welcome, but achieving 1.5 million homes will likely require further action.

Furthermore, this is only part of the puzzle. As important as having a skilled workforce is ensuring that homes are built at pace, and to appropriately high standards. Focusing on both quality and quantity will ensure that housing projects are higher-quality, environmentally efficient and built to last. This means government working hand in glove with industry to set standards and get building, driving growth and raising living standards across the country.

Re:State is delighted to welcome Antonia Bance MP, member of the Business and Trade Committee, whose experience spans both local government and her work with Shelter, to discuss how government, industry, and wider stakeholders can collaborate to deliver the Government’s ambitious housing agenda.

This private roundtable will be held in-person and will take place under the Chatham House rule. This event is kindly sponsored by Chartered Institute of Building, Royal Institute of British Architects, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Royal Town Planning Institute.
