Regulating for growth

The UK’s long-term prosperity depends on the strength of its markets: their ability to generate innovation, drive productivity, and deliver benefits to consumers. At the same time, the challenges of the 2020s are reshaping the world in which markets operate. From industrial competition between the US, China and Europe to technological disruption, labour market change and the net zero transition, there is growing pressure on governments to intervene in ways that support national resilience while preserving dynamism.

These tensions bring important questions into focus – how can we protect consumers while driving innovation and growth, and ensuring competition.

Re:State is delighted to welcome Caleb Deeks, Director General, Competition, Markets and Regulatory Reform, Department for Business and Trade, to share his perspective on how we might achieve the right balance and support the Government’s growth mission.
