After decades of underfunding, changing consumer habits and cultural shifts, many local places have been hollowed out, with vacant properties on high streets and crumbling social infrastructure. This erosion not only stifles community vibrancy but also hampers the potential for local growth, which is essential for building resilient economies and fostering opportunities where they are most needed. The Government's radical plans for local government reorganisation present an opportunity to think afresh about how England's communities should be supported, represented, and governed.
The Government's plans for strengthening the Community Right to Buy are an exciting start. It is essential to create new opportunities for communities to have a say in the future of their area and play a part in improving it, and ensuring they can take control of local assets and spaces is an important part of that.
