Spreading opportunity, driving growth: tackling the economic inactivity challenge

Economic inactivity, representing a profound loss of talent and a serious drag on growth, is rightly a key Government priority. According to new PwC research, it’s also something businesses are concerned about and will need to play a key role in working with the Government to tackle it. This is particularly tragic among the growing cohort of young people who are inactive. Addressing the problem is urgent on a human and an economic level, and key to both the Government’s missions on growth and opportunity.

The Government’s White Paper recognises that government cannot succeed in tackling economic inactivity alone, and that businesses must be a key partner. PwC’s research explores how businesses can help prevent people from leaving work in the first place, an under-explored, but vital, part of the solution – and key to both the health of the public finances and the tax base, as well as ensuring a strong labour market for employers.

Re:State (formerly Reform think tank) is delighted to welcome Dame Meg Hillier MP, Chair, Treasury Select Committee, to discuss the practical next steps needed for government to achieve its goal of slashing inactivity in order to boost growth and ensure people achieve their potential.

This is a private roundtable which will be held under the Chatham House rule and is kindly supported by PwC.
