Alex Walker

I joined Re:State in January 2026 as a Senior Researcher working on the ‘Re:Imagining the Local State’ programme.

I previously worked in research and communications roles at several academic think tanks and research institutes, most recently the Bennett School of Public Policy at the University of Cambridge, and UK in a Changing Europe at King’s College London.

My recent research has focused primarily on devolution and intergovernmental relations. My broader research interests include constitution and government reform, community empowerment and public participation. I believe that the UK’s system of politics and governance can be improved so that it delivers better outcomes and is more trusted, and that rigorous research and bold thinking can help to get us there.

My favourite reformer is… 

Michael Young – combined idealism with practical action, continued innovating and institution-building throughout his life, big believer in active democracy and empowered communities.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? 

Often my neighbour’s dog (yapping).
